Workplace Chaplaincy

Workplace Chaplaincy works with individuals, providing pastoral support and a listening ear within companies, public bodies and voluntary agencies.  These include:

  • The Emergency Services (Police, Fire & Ambulance Services)
  • Travel & Transport (London Luton International Airport)
  • Manufacturing (GM Vauxhall)
  • Retail (Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons and Tesco)
  • Leisure (Rank & Inland Waterways)

Mission in the Economy

One of the commonly expressed views is that linking faith, life and work is difficult.  MiTE encourages individuals and churches to explore the opportunities that this presents by encouraging engagement in a number of ways.

Employers are increasingly of the view that if people are able to bring to work all their personal attributes, along with their skills, then the workplace is enriched.  In response to legislation, organisations are increasingly encouraging the setting up of staff networks to promote diversity in the workplace.

Transform Work UKThis ought to include faith groups and in particular for us, Christian Work Life Groups.  Your group may wish at some stage to seek formal recognition under their employer’s diversity framework.  This is a developmental opportunity and Transform Work UK (TWUK) is our partner and can provide help and support. www.transformworkuk.org

WM Resources: WM is able to signpost individuals and churches to a number of resources to assist with exploring the relationship of faith, work and economic life.  The Diocese of St Albans has available a study resource “Faith, Work and the Economy” which forms part of its “Growing Together in Christ” resource

WM Training: WM also offers training for new and existing Chaplains through a popular contemporary modular course offered over two Saturdays, twice per annum.  In addition work placements are offered to provide insight and hands on experience of chaplaincy in the workplace to encourage and boost recruitment.  The course is offered jointly with Chaplaincy to People at Work, Cambridge.

Ministers in Secular Employment (MSE): It has been observed that whilst vocations within education, the caring professions or the church are encouraged, vocations within the business world have been less well understood or supported. Helping individuals in the workplace to understand and be aware of the impact of ethical practices and maintain their integrity in their workplaces through mutual learning and development is, we believe, crucial.

Regeneration & Renewal

WM aims to play its part in the facilitation of distinctive social regeneration schemes and help the church to connect with and influence economic issues. This involves initiating projects which contribute to social cohesion and neighbourhood development; i.e. support for the vulnerable and marginalised, those affected by the economic downturn, (including the homeless and unemployed); those in trouble and at risk.

WM also collaborates with partners to develop courses, conferences and opportunities to build the competencies that will help people to return to purposeful and gainful work and employment.

WM aims to contribute to the reduction of re-offending through collaboration with The Chrysalis Programmea world class Personal Leadership and Personal Effectiveness Development Programme that has been created to support individuals that want to own and drive personal change in their lives ensuring that offenders are provided with the best possible chance to change their behaviours, combined with a qualification that contributes to their increased prospects of obtaining employment.
