Reindorp on Costa and Coates
GOD AT WORK - Living Everyday with Purpose.
Ken Costa, ISBN 0-8264-9635-0, Continuum 2007, 193p, £12.99.
SHADES OF GREY- Making Choices in Uncertainty.
Dudley Coates, ISBN 1-85852-316-8, Inspire 2006, 134p, £.6.99.
Ken Costa says in his introduction - ‘if the Christian faith is not relevant in the
workplace, it is not relevant at all.’ and Dudley Coates suggests the church should be a
launching pad for Christians at work not a bolt hole. But their contrasting careers bring
out contrasting responses to the complex world of work.
Ken Costa has been an investment banker for over 30 years in the City. He is vice-chair
of UBS Investment Bank and also chair of Alpha International. Dudley Coates has been
a civil servant for over 30 years and has been Vice President of the Methodist
Conference.
Costa’s style is very positive. He tackles his subjects with a wealth of illustrations and
biblical quotations. The chapter headings give an idea of his range: Work Matters;
Ambition and Life Choices; Tough Decisions; Work-Life Balance; Stress; Failure;
Disappointment and Hope; Money and Giving; Spiritual Renewal. He acknowledges that
it is getting harder to be a Christian in the workplace-particularly in the financial sector
where markets have become ever more volatile and decisions more complex, choices less
clear cut.
Costa is much in demand as an inspirational speaker. The book is a stimulating read. He
defends the market economy: ‘I have not found a better system. It is a good servant but a bad master-it needs to operate within a wider moral context,…without a values-based
architecture, the market economy is weak in its foundations.’ (p6). But he does not tackle
the fundamental questions posed by the world’s economic system-for instance the
growing imbalance between rich and poor countries, and the way investment decisions
can contribute to this.
Anyone working in the City would be stimulated and challenged by Costa’s views. But
his book (rather a city price too) needs to be complemented by Coates and his wrestling
with some of the difficult issues of working life – Beginnings; Truth and Uncertainty;
People and Decisions; Competition and Co-operation; Trust and the Media and his
conclusions.
Coates’ starting point is revealing: ‘Our God came to a messy, real world, to a world of
conflict, to a world which poses questions rather than provides answers…unless we can
reclaim this belief and act on it, we hardly deserve to have much impact on our society.’
Both these men reflect on the impact of their faith on the particular worlds within which
they work. I would recommend read Costa first and then face Coates’ more questioning
style.
